I've yet to see the anime adaptation of GTO, so I don't know how they stack up against each other, but it seems to be favorably reviewed out there on the internet. Of this inspirational teacher genre, I've only seen this, Gokusen, and Dragon Zakura. I enjoyed them all to different extents and for different reasons, and I would love to find more shows like them.
